Trouble for the Ontario Liberals in St. Paul’s?

The Ontario provincial Liberal party has always come out strong in the midtown Toronto riding of St. Paul’s, but the upcoming by-election could signal big changes. In the past, Liberal Michael Bryant has always been the dominant candidate but since the former attorney general was charged with criminal negligence involving the death of a bicycle courier two weeks ago, the tables could soon turn for the Liberal Party. The struggle in St. Paul’s is mainly over the Harmonized Sales Tax, or HST, to be introduced next July which will blend the provincial and federal goods and sales tax. While both the Progressive Conservatives and the New Democrats oppose the tax, the Liberals support it and they could face a tight race in the upcoming by-election.
