Bloc leader Gilles Duceppe announced that his party will support the Conservative budget motion scheduled on Sept. 18, thereby allowing the Conservatives to avoid another confidence vote until at least the first week of October. Amidst all this Jack Layton of the NDP has fuelled speculation that he will support the Tory Employment Insurance bill changes. Layton has said that his party will support the bill if they are guaranteed the changes promised will come. This comes despite claiming at least 79 that his party will not support any Tory legislation since the fall election. If the conservative government wants to stay in power they will need the NDP's vote. It has been pointed out that if the NDP heads into an election now, they will be at a disadvantage to a resurgent, stronger Liberal party in English Canada, least of all having funding issues and risk being overshadowed in the media during the election.
